This syllabus covers the first semester of 2 hourly seminars over 5 weeks. The course aims to introduce you to the sources and techniques of the English common law, from a substantive and methodological viewpoint. The themes include: an overview to common law reasoning and legal actors; how to find the law, how to do legal research and use online resources; precedent and reasoning by analogy in theory and practice; judicial law-making and the significance of dissenting opinions; the position of the UK Supreme Court in a globalised world.
