This course is intended as an introduction to English history from the sixteenth and seventeenth century. It will focus on the major political, religious, cultural and economic transformations at work in England and its budding empire. We will discuss the emergence of Anglicanism and the English reformation, the political struggle between supporters of an absolutist model and proponents of a strong Parliament, the nexus between politics and religion at the core of the Puritan and the Glorious Revolution, the evolution of English society and economy, the birth of an Empire and the growth of London. Various sources and types of documents will be used, classical historical sources as well as literature and visual arts. A good understanding of written and spoken English is required.
